New Delhi, December 6,2023 – Amidst the intrigue surrounding Virat Kohli’s departure as captain of the Indian cricket team, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has come forward with new revelations about the backstory. In an exclusive tell-all, Ganguly disclosed that he played an active role in advocating for Rohit Sharma to take over the leadership mantle.

Addressing speculation, Ganguly clarified that he did not remove Kohli from captaincy against the latter’s will. Kohli himself voluntarily stepped down as T20 captain in order to better manage his workload and focus more on Test and ODI cricket. The BCCI requested Kohli to reconsider, but he remained firm on relinquishing his T20 leadership position.

Ganguly went on to suggest that if Kohli was not inclined to captain the side across all white-ball formats, he should give up the entire white-ball leadership. This appears to have been a factor in Kohli’s eventual departure as ODI skipper as well.

Elaborating on events leading up to Rohit’s appointment, Ganguly revealed he had pushed for the Mumbai batsman to take over as captain despite initial reluctance on Rohit’s part. Ganguly cited his belief that Rohit would excel in the leadership role and could take Indian cricket to the next level.

“World Cups are different than a bilateral series because the pressures are different. They have been exceptional this World Cup and hopefully six-seven months down the line in the West Indies they will be again at their best,” Ganguly said.

For his part, Kohli has reiterated that relinquishing T20 captaincy was his own choice, motivated by managing his immense workload and focus areas. With his batting form also having dipped considerably, shedding leadership duties appears to have worked for Kohli as he struck a return to form at the recent ODI World Cup.

Ganguly emphasized that irrespective of administrative decisions, it is the players’ on-field performances that matter the most. With Indian cricket entering a new era under Rohit’s leadership, the focus remains on the team scaling greater heights on the world stage. Kohli’s return as a batting mainstay will likely have a key role to play in this quest.
